Default Foreman rear end binding after rebuild

98 Foreman 400

Hey guys, stripped out the rear axle and ring gear hauling a doe out about 4 weeks ago. i purchased a new ring gear and axle as they were both garbage. Upon reassemble i jacked up the front and tested to be sure the rear spun free while in gear before fully reassembling the housings. Everything looked good so i moved forward on the assembly.

Once i put the wheels back on to properly torque down the axle bolt I climb on for the test ride and no go. Something is binding somewhere and i did not have enough beer on hand or patience to tear it back apart tonight.

My bet is going on the shaft or u joint.

looking for any pointers...

Which hub nut did you tighten first? They both have stoppers so it shouldn't matter but I still torque the brake side first. Speaking of which was the stopper installed on the axle on the left side of the axle?

Welcome to the forum.

to get the hub nuts on i had to get the axle positioned just right and lightly tighten one then put the other on and hand tighten. once hand tight i put the wheels on and tightened to 80ft lbs. I installed a stopper on the left side between the hub and bearing. The right side did not have one when i took everything apart and from the looks of it the axle lip keeps the bearing and hub separate on the right side.

Pretty sure i reassembled correctly.

1. bolted on right axle tube to diff.
2. slid axle through tube and diff.
3. bolted on brake panel
4. bolted on left axle tube
5. installed stopper and hub on left side
6. installed brake drum and hub on right side.

You have that correct, the differential was turning freely before reassembly so I was going after that. I would try loosening things until it frees up to know what is holding it.

Yeah, won't really know til i start tearing it back apart and testing tonight... The new axle seemed to be a tad bit shorter than the old. It was a PITA to get the hub nuts started on both sides. Very little thread sticking out of the hubs.

You don't happen to still have the part number for the axle? It's possible they sent the wrong one and if it's shorter that will be the problem.

just thinking about it while working... If i accidentally installed the ring gear spacers onto the wrong side of the new ring gear could that be allowing it to bind?

The right hub was binding on the brake cover. I left the drum out as the rear were never maintained nor worked. This caused the hub to hang on the edge of the brake cover only problem is that with the drum installed I don't have enough thread exposed on each end to even get the nuts started. I emailed the ebay seller to see if he stands behind his product... wish me luck

Anyone know the end to end axle length on this? i no longer have the old one to compare it against.
