400 Ticking Bad

So my sons 2000 400 is ticking bad. It got an oil leak 2 years ago when we were at boggs and boulders and it started to tick then. So i redid the top end. Then i installed the oil filter backwards for one ride. So now i have replaced the following, valves, valve springs, valve seats, valve seals, timing chain and it still ticks. Valves are adjusted correctly. So does anyone have any ideas? It sounds like its from the top of the motor.

well having run the motor with oil filter in backwards, you could have starved things and again need a top end?
sorry, not what your hoping to hear, but, no lube can ruin things pretty quickly?

maybe do a compression test and have a see there??

My 400 has a tick and has since new, but its rather mild, what I gather most just call it a Honda tick,
so, some times a LITTLE tick is the norm here too
but if its louder then a little, ???

I did a new topend after the oil filter being put in backwards. Its a loud tick. My 450 has the low honda tick. The 400 runs awesome you just tap the button and it starts right up. It idles great just ticks loudly.

Is it a tick or a knock (ie light or heavy sound?) Does it sound like it is coming from the bottom end like rod knock? Does the sound change pitch under load? Is the timing chain adjuster moving freely? can you pin the sound down to bottom/top and left/right at all?
Is your exhaust snug with a gasket in the head?

Sounds like its from the top right side if your sitting on it. Its a loud tick and gets louder and faster if you throttle it. Could a slightly bent rod do this?

Hey toms99tj,
The first thing to do is to confirm where the tick is coming from.
A cheap stethoscope or a length of rubber hose stuck to your ear will
work in diagnosing the location, but I'd bet money it's in the top end since
that's where most of the up&down goes on vs. the round&round in the lower end.
Have you checked your push rods to make sure they are perfectly straight?
Simple to do, just pull them out and roll them on a perfectly flat surface.
Make sure to put them back in the same as they came out if they check out to
be okay.

So i pulled the top end and did the manual cam adjuster and it still ticks, knocks. It for sure sounds like its right under the valve cover. So i ordered push rods and will see if that does anything.
